Synopsis

In a version of Edo reshaped by an alien occupation, the city’s traditional samurai ambitions have been suppressed under a puppet government, and public possession of swords is outlawed. Gintoki Sakata, a silver-haired eccentric who insists on carrying a wooden sword, continues to live by samurai ways despite the prohibition. He runs Yorozuya, a small enterprise that accepts miscellaneous tasks, often undertaking assignments that lead to unconventional outcomes. His companions include Shinpachi Shimura, an earnest bespectacled youth aspiring to samurai practice; Kagura, a robust, tomboyish girl with extraordinary physical strength and a prodigious appetite; and Sadaharu, a very large dog with a penchant for biting heads. Together the Yorozuya confront a range of situations in this altered Edo—from encounters with members of alien nobility to clashes with local criminals—balancing action and comedy amid the city’s upheaval.
