A demonic vice-commander of the Shinsengumi, Toushirou Hijikata, falls under the influence of a bewitched blade that alters his character, turning him from a strict, pragmatic officer into an obsessed enthusiast. While he attempts to lift the enchantment, an ambitious newcomer to the police force, Itou Kamotarou, exploits the situation to challenge Hijikata’s authority and advance his own position. Itou’s maneuvers conceal a deeper and more sinister agenda, threatening the stability and very survival of the Shinsengumi. Meanwhile, in a different part of Edo, the Yorozuya team encounters a prospective recruit: Pirako Doromizu, a cheerful young woman whose outward warmth conceals a capacity for extreme violence. Unbeknownst to Gintoki and his companions, Pirako is connected to a powerful Kabuki district leader, and her arrival triggers events that escalate into open conflict within the district, plunging its residents into civil unrest.
