Synopsis

After losing his family to a mysterious blaze, Shirou is rescued and raised by the mage Kiritsugu Emiya, who instructs him in magic and a strict sense of justice. Years after Kiritsugu's death, while cleaning his school at night, Shirou becomes entangled in a deadly confrontation between two summoned superhuman combatants called Servants. Attempting to flee, he suffers a near-fatal wound, survives against the odds, and then faces the return of his attacker. In a desperate moment, Shirou summons his own Servant, a chivalrous knight known as Saber. Bound together, they are forced to enter the Fifth Holy Grail War, a last-person-standing conflict among seven Servant–mage pairs vying for the omnipotent Holy Grail. The story follows Shirou as he wrestles with the tension between his inherited ideal of heroism and the brutal demands of the war, questioning whether he can live up to his foster father's example or fall in the attempt.
