Ichigo Kurosaki is a normal high school student until a malevolent spirit attacks his family. In the aftermath he encounters Soul Reaper Rukia Kuchiki, who is wounded while defending them. To save his loved ones, Ichigo accepts Rukia's powers and assumes the role of a Soul Reaper. With Rukia unable to recover her abilities, Ichigo becomes responsible for confronting the Hollows terrorizing their community. He is accompanied by classmates Orihime Inoue, Yasutora Sado, and Uryuu Ishida, each contributing distinct capabilities. As they adjust to their responsibilities and provide mutual support both during and between battles, Ichigo gradually discovers that the Hollows are not the sole danger threatening the human realm.
