Squad 10 is assigned to safeguard a royal escort transporting a potent relic known as the Ouin. While Captain Toushirou Hitsugaya and Lieutenant Rangiku Matsumoto survey the surroundings in the human realm, the convoy is ambushed by raiders who smash through the procession and seize the Ouin. Hitsugaya briefly engages one assailant, then pursues the fleeing thieves, leaving Matsumoto and the stunned squad behind. Following the pursuit, the Seireitei charges Hitsugaya with abandoning his duty and places Squad 10 under an indefinite lockdown. In the human world, Ichigo Kurosaki encounters the wounded captain during an investigation into a spiritual disturbance, but Hitsugaya abruptly bolts before Ichigo can learn much. Upon learning the full circumstances, Ichigo, Rukia Kuchiki, Renji Abarai, and Matsumoto mobilize to clear Hitsugaya’s name and uncover who stole the Ouin. As the search progresses, Hitsugaya is troubled by memories of a figure from his past that haunt him while he tracks the true perpetrator.
