This initial Bleach OVA, produced prior to the television debut and first shown at Jump Festa 2004 before a later DVD release, serves as an early version of events later seen in episodes 8–9. In it, Kurosaki Ichigo, acting as a temporary Shinigami on behalf of Kuchiki Rukia, identifies one of the Hollows he has been pursuing as responsible for his mother’s death.
