Synopsis

Set near the close of the Bakumatsu period, a feared assassin once known as Hitokiri Battousai vanished at the height of revolutionary conflict. A decade of relative calm has passed, yet his name still haunts survivors of those turbulent times. Unknown to most, he renounced killing and assumed a new identity as Kenshin Himura, a roaming swordsman who outwardly carries a lighthearted demeanor while bearing deep remorse. Sworn to never take a life again, he commits himself to defending the defenseless. During his travels he encounters Kaoru Kamiya, who runs a kendo school threatened by a fraud who claims the Battousai name. After Kenshin intervenes, Kaoru offers him lodging at the dojo, pausing his wandering. The narrative follows Kenshin as he endeavors to protect others and maintain his vow, even as adversaries from his former life and new antagonists surface, testing his resolve and the limits of his reformed path.
