Fifteen years following a catastrophic event called the Second Impact, Japan confronts a succession of colossal, otherworldly attackers known as Angels that assault Tokyo-3. Conventional weaponry and military strategy fail to stop them, so humanity's defense centers on NERV, a secretive organization led by the austere Gendou Ikari. NERV fields massive humanoid machines called Evangelions, equipped with cutting-edge armaments and defended by energy barriers termed Absolute Terror Fields. Shinji Ikari, a 14-year-old returned to Tokyo-3 after years apart from his father, struggles with deep-seated trauma from his mother's death and emotional abandonment. Closed off and fearful of intimacy, Shinji's life is altered by Misato Katsuragi, a 29-year-old NERV officer whose informal, protective manner offers him unfamiliar warmth. When a catastrophic Angel assault unfolds, Gendou reveals that Shinji is uniquely suited to link with Evangelion Unit-01, whose operation depends on close biometric synchronization. Despite the severe psychological toll of piloting an Evangelion, Shinji accepts the role and fights to protect Tokyo-3 while remaining unaware of his father's hidden agenda.
