In 2015, over ten years after a calamity known as Second Impact, humanity struggles to rebuild while confronting enormous hostile entities called Angels, whose existence threatens to trigger a global cataclysm. Teenager Shinji, estranged from his father since his mother's death, is summoned to the fortified city of Tokyo-3 by Gendou Ikari. Expecting a chance to reconnect, Shinji instead learns he has been brought there to operate Evangelion Unit-01, a massive combat apparatus engineered to fight the Angels. Thrust into repeated, high-stakes confrontations, he is forced to confront the personal and moral consequences of piloting a weapon at the center of a scheme with far-reaching implications for humanity's survival.
