Following the death of someone close, Shinji Ikari retreats into an emotional shutdown and cannot operate Evangelion Unit-01. His father, Gendou Ikari, leads NERV in a race against the covert group SEELE, each pursuing a different ultimate outcome: SEELE intends to forge a deity by merging their souls into an Evangelion, whereas Gendou aims to collapse humanity into a single primordial existence to reunite with his late wife, Yui. SEELE launches a violent assault on NERV headquarters, cutting down personnel as they attempt to seize control. In response, Asuka Langley Souryuu pilots Evangelion Unit-02 in a desperate defense against SEELE’s most destructive forces. Amid the chaos and societal breakdown, a despondent Shinji hides within NERV, and Captain Misato Katsuragi searches urgently for him, knowing that the world’s destiny may depend on his actions.
