Fourteen years after the Third Impact, Earth lies desolate and human society has collapsed. Shinji Ikari is found inside Evangelion Unit-01 and recovered from space by Asuka Langley Shikinami and Mari Illustrious Makinami, only to be held by WILLE, a military group commanded by his former guardian Misato Katsuragi. Estranged and treated with distrust by those he once knew, Shinji struggles with isolation and the fallout of his past choices. Rei Ayanami extracts him from WILLE and brings him back to NERV headquarters, where Shinji soon forms a quick, meaningful bond with the enigmatic Kaworu Nagisa, who offers compassion and perspective on NERV’s ongoing struggle against the Angels. That fragile period of solace is brief: a looming confrontation forces Shinji to face former allies as adversaries. In the ensuing clash over the world's fate, Shinji confronts the irreversible consequences of prior events and learns that what has happened cannot be undone.
