Synopsis
Set in 2029 in the advanced metropolis of Niihama, society has embraced cybernetic limb replacements and deep technological integration. Public Security Section 9 is tasked with addressing corruption, terrorism, and other dangers that emerge in this interconnected era. Major Motoko Kusanagi, a determined leader within Section 9, pursues a shadowy hacker identified as the Puppet Master, whose attacks leave victims without their memories. The Puppet Master operates from a nearly full-cybernetic body, granting formidable capabilities. As Kusanagi and her team track the perpetrator, involvement from other agencies, including Section 6, complicates the investigation. Confronted with the case's tangled implications, Kusanagi reflects on philosophical questions about identity and purpose, ultimately finding that the Puppet Master holds the key to those answers.
