Synopsis

In a near-future society where full conversion of human bodies into mechanical forms is routine, physical and digital capabilities converge and reshape daily life. That same technology also enables sophisticated criminal activity, prompting the government to create Section 9: an autonomous law-enforcement team assigned to investigate complex, sensitive offenses rooted in advanced cybernetic and information-era methods. Under the leadership of Daisuke Aramaki and Motoko Kusanagi, the unit handles a wide range of cases across social strata, typically resolving threats through careful operations. Their stability is disrupted when a highly skilled hacker known only as “The Laughing Man” emerges. The hacker’s activities trigger a tense pursuit that entangles Section 9 in a hazardous cat-and-mouse struggle, as traces of the attacker spread through Japan and force the team to confront the implications of pervasive cybernetic transformation.
