Synopsis
When Major Motoko Kusanagi is no longer present, Batou of Section 9 is tasked with probing a series of brutal killings tied to defective gynoids, or sex robots. A puzzling message from one damaged unit prompts him to doubt simple mechanical failure. As he and partner Togusa dig deeper, theories of politically driven assassinations and the existence of an unlawful artificial consciousness emerge, pulling them into a dangerous conspiracy. Their pursuit forces them to confront uncanny adversaries and a future in which the border between human and machine dissolves, where perception and objective reality grow indistinguishable amid a landscape populated by automatons and lifelike dolls but lacking human warmth.
