Set in 2029 after two global conflicts, an Asian coalition led by Japan holds geopolitical dominance. To preserve that order, the alliance relies on an elite security service composed of cybernetically enhanced operatives who confront high-technology terrorism and other transnational dangers. These augmented agents possess the ability to transfer their consciousness through the pervasive internet into machines and hybrid human–machine bodies. Major Motoko Kusanagi, a fully cybernetic field officer, leads a specialist team tracking a malleable virtual being called the Puppet Master. Created by a rival division within the security apparatus, the Puppet Master claims selfhood, asserting it originated within the vast currents of data and requests recognition and a tangible, embodied existence, challenging the authority that produced it.
