Synopsis

Set in 22nd-century Japan, society relies on the Sibyl System to evaluate citizens by measuring their mental state for indicators of criminal intent, called Psycho-Pass. Law enforcement uses these objective readings to assess threat levels and justify strong measures against those deemed dangerous. Inspectors enforce the law and may employ lethal force against individuals showing even minor hostile tendencies. Working under Inspectors are Enforcers: once Inspectors themselves, now classified as latent criminals who are permitted limited freedom in return for carrying out difficult and morally fraught enforcement tasks. Akane Tsunemori, a young woman who earnestly wants to protect and serve the public, joins this system and is paired with veteran Enforcer Shinya Kougami. Through her experiences alongside him, Akane comes to realize that the Sibyl System's determinations are not infallible and begins to confront troubling inconsistencies. Faced with a reality that contradicts her prior assumptions, she must grapple with what justice means and whether a society governed by an apparently compromised mechanism can truly administer it.
