Synopsis

After their hometown is devastated, childhood companions Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro vow to enlist in the Defense Force, a militarized agency defending Japan from towering kaijuu. Years later, Kafka, now 32, has abandoned his youthful ambitions and spends his days clearing the remains of slain monsters while Mina advances as a frontline soldier. Kafka's routine shifts when he meets Reno Ichikawa, a driven recruit who mirrors Kafka's younger self. A violent encounter with a rogue kaijuu forces Kafka to act and he rescues Reno, but sustains severe injuries. Following another assault while both recuperate, Kafka acquires the ability to assume a humanoid kaijuu form, granting him the immense strength and abilities of the creatures that threaten the nation. Labeled "Kaijuu No. 8" by military authorities, Kafka commits to applying his transformed state to protect others. United by respect and shared purpose, Kafka and Reno aim to stand with fighters like Mina on the Defense Force's front lines.
