Tokyo faces a hidden menace: ghouls that consume human flesh while masquerading as ordinary people. Ken Kaneki, a withdrawn university student who prefers books to news, keeps distance from the escalating danger until Rize Kamishiro, an alluring woman, interrupts his solitude by asking him out. During their walk, Kaneki discovers Rize's true nature and becomes the victim of her lethal intentions. He later wakes in a hospital to find his survival owed to organ transplants taken from the now-deceased Rize. The grafts trigger unsettling changes in his body, transforming him into a hybrid of human and ghoul. Confronted with new physical needs and threats, Kaneki struggles to maintain his sense of self while caught between the violent reality of the ghouls and the authorities who pursue them.
