Synopsis

In a distant future, four spacefarers confront the sudden death of their colleague Makimura, who left behind a brief note hinting he would be murdered. With their vessel beyond repair, the crew abandons ship in escape pods, unable to pause for mourning. Tension rises as suspicion falls on crewmate Kizaki because of his rivalry with Makimura over the ship’s sole woman, Nana Ichinomiya. Their unease deepens when Makimura’s pod appears to tail them while ignoring communication attempts. As they pursue explanations, they uncover strange legends tied to Makimura — including tales of the Phoenix, a bird linked to immortality — and other baffling aspects of his life. After crashing onto an apparently uninhabited planet, the survivors at last confront the disturbing reality behind Makimura and the behavior of his pod. The story examines human cruelty driven by selfish desire and the consequences of pursuing those urges without restraint.
