After a traffic accident leaves her in a coma for two years, Shiki Ryougi regains consciousness but finds her past erased and is overwhelmed by profound isolation. She begins to perceive dark outlines around objects, and when she makes contact she can break them apart—a discovery that terrifies her. Concerned, her friend Mikiya Kokutou seeks the aid of Touko Aozaki, a mage who can explain the nature of Shiki’s ability—the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception—and instruct her in how to understand and handle this unsettling power. The story focuses on Shiki’s struggle with memory loss, the emotional weight of loneliness, and the unsettling realization of her new, dangerous perception.
