Synopsis

A recently released ex-yakuza, Yotarou renounces criminal life to pursue rakugo, the traditional Japanese comic storytelling he encountered while imprisoned. Driven to seek out Yakumo Yuurakutei, the performer who inspired him, Yotarou petitions the master for instruction; Yakumo reluctantly accepts him as his first apprentice. During his training Yotarou encounters Konatsu, a blunt young woman being raised in Yakumo’s care after the death of her father, Sukeroku Yuurakutei, who was also a prominent rakugo artist. Konatsu harbors a quiet devotion to her father’s distinctive performance style, which draws Yotarou toward Sukeroku’s approach even as he studies contrasting techniques. Observing this awakens Yakumo’s memories and emotions tied to an earlier era and a pledge made with his longtime rival. The narrative alternates between past and present, exploring the craft of rakugo, the bonds formed through mentorship and rivalry, and the personal sacrifices and inner lives of those committed to preserving this singular storytelling tradition.
