Anita King, Maggie Mui, and Michelle Cheung form the Paper Sisters, the team behind the Three Sisters Detective Agency in Hong Kong that specializes in cases tied to books. Hired to escort Nenene Sumiregawa, a Japanese novelist hampered by writer’s block after the vanishing of her close friend Yomiko Readman, the sisters confront violent threats at a book event and use their Paper Master abilities to rescue her. Remaining as her protectors, they balance bodyguard duties in Japan with ongoing investigations sent by the obscure organization Dokusensha. Maggie and Michelle, devoted fans of Nenene’s work, find this assignment gratifying, while Anita, who possesses the same paper-manipulating gift, dislikes reading despite her role. As they settle into life abroad and continue to examine dangerous volumes, connections emerge between Nenene, the disappearance of Yomiko, and the mysterious books that draw Paper Masters into peril. What begins as a routine job evolves into a far-reaching case that forces the sisters to confront how much they will put at stake for the world of literature.
