Synopsis

Takashi Natsume, a reserved young man who can perceive and interact with youkai and inherits the Book of Friends, progresses on a personal path toward understanding himself and finding acceptance. His chief companion remains Madara—an arrogant, food- and sake-loving wolf spirit who adopts the benign form of a plump cat known as Nyanko-sensei and serves as Natsume’s protective bodyguard. When Natsume becomes separated from Nyanko-sensei, a band of masked, monkey-like youkai abducts him and carries him into their forest while seeking the Book of Friends. Discovering that his charge has been taken, Nyanko-sensei rallies Natsume’s youkai acquaintances and leads an effort to recover him. Their mission brings them into a perilous woodland full of hostile forces, among them the Matoba Clan, long-time adversaries tied to Natsume’s past. From confrontations at the Matoba stronghold to memories rooted in Natsume’s childhood home, this installment returns to familiar themes of danger, companionship, and confronting past wounds as Natsume grapples with his own inner demons.
