Ancient, enigmatic lifeforms called Mushi subtly and overtly influence human existence. Ginko, a traveling specialist who studies these entities, moves between settlements attempting to resolve the odd and disquieting incidents they cause. Manifestations range from temporal repetitions, animate shadows, and telepathic links to slow-developing conditions that become apparent only after years. By circumstance Ginko acts as a judge of whether a particular Mushi presence brings harm or benefit, yet these distinctions often depend on personal perspective. Some people embrace the abilities bestowed by Mushi until those powers consume them; others seek to remove ailments that nonetheless shield them from greater disaster. Encounters with Mushi force individuals to accept difficult consequences and confront emotional wounds they had not recognized, or face outcomes they cannot fathom.
