Mushi are the most primitive manifestations of existence, entities that persist without intent beyond mere being. They lie outside moral labels like good or evil and appear in myriad guises, imitating elements of the natural world—plants, illnesses, or transient phenomena such as rainbows. Any concise definition falls short: calling Mushi simply life understates their nature, and concrete knowledge about them is limited because most people do not perceive them. Ginko, a Mushishi, is a researcher who studies these beings, following reports and strange events linked to Mushi in an effort to comprehend their place within the broader spectrum of life. His inquiries into these unassuming yet enigmatic presences drive him to investigate incidents that might illuminate why Mushi exist and what, if anything, their existence implies about the meaning of life.
