Synopsis

Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu Gaiden adapts side narratives from the original novels, tracing the formative campaigns and personal trials of Reinhard von Müsel and Siegfried Kircheis prior to the pivotal Battle of Astarte. In “The Silver-White Valley,” the two graduates are posted to the icy frontier world Kapche-Lanka and confront a superior whose hidden agenda threatens Reinhard through ties to his sister Annerose. “Dreams of the Morning, Songs of the Night” follows their assignment to the Imperial Military Police, where they encounter systemic abuse of power and are tasked with probing the homicide of a former student. In “Dishonor,” as Reinhard awaits elevation to Count von Lohengramm, Kircheis visits the artificial resort Kreuznach III and becomes involved in a narcotics investigation connected to an attack on a disgraced ex–Vice Admiral. “A Hundred Billion Stars, a Hundred Billion Lights” depicts Reinhard, still commanding a lone squadron, frustrated with ineffective superiors during combat with the Free Planets Alliance; under Vice Admiral Richard von Grimmelshausen’s direct command he accumulates victories and repeatedly confronts Hermann von Lüneburg, a commodore tied to the Alliance’s Rosen Ritter. The OVA series presents a measured, character-focused examination of ambition, loyalty, institutional corruption, and military rivalry within the wider conflict that leads up to Astarte.
