Synopsis

Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu Gaiden (1999) is the second OVA collection adapting auxiliary tales from the Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu novels. It traces Yang Wen-li’s rise in prominence after evacuating civilians from El Facil, his informal promotion and sudden media scrutiny, and his inquiry into the Year 730 Mafia, a circle of Alliance officers linked to famed strategist Bruce Ashbey. Yang pursues a consequential allegation from Ashbey’s widow that, if true, could reverberate through Alliance politics. Parallel episodes follow Reinhard von Müsel and Siegfried Kircheis within the Galactic Empire: their assignment aboard the destroyer Hameln II where Reinhard assumes command after the captain is incapacitated; Reinhard’s intervention in a noble dispute over mining rights in Odin that leads him to accept a duel to defend a friend of his sister; and a confidential mission to recover a stolen Seffle particle generator prototype and a fleeing count, for which Reinhard is provided only the cruiser Hässliche Entlein. The collection culminates in a large-scale imperial campaign marking Kaiser Friedrich IV’s thirtieth year, where combat between Imperial and Alliance forces draws Reinhard into a decisive action that alters the engagement’s outcome.
