After seeing a televised match where Karasuno’s renowned player helps secure a narrow victory, young Shouyou Hinata becomes determined to take up volleyball so he can achieve the same aerial prowess. Enrolling at the same high school as his idol, he tries to join the volleyball club despite being notably short. Upon arrival, Hinata encounters Tobio Kageyama, a brilliant setter nicknamed the "King of the Court," whom Hinata remembers from a crushing middle school loss. Their antagonistic first meeting and ensuing rivalry lead the existing Karasuno players to withhold club membership until both can demonstrate the ability to collaborate. Motivated by their passion for the sport, Hinata and Kageyama return with a plan to prove they can function as teammates. Gradually forming an unconventional setter-and-spiker pairing, they face renewed competition when a former rival school challenges Karasuno to practice matches, reigniting competitive tensions between the teams.
