Synopsis
In 2024 a high-profile abduction targeted Ernest Serano, head of the pioneering micromachine firm Serano Genomics; the case, known as the Laughing Man Incident, went unresolved for six years. Detective Yamaguchi, who had been pursuing the Laughing Man, arranges to meet Togusa of Public Safety Section 9 about the dormant investigation, but he unexpectedly perishes in an apparent accident shortly after sending the message. As multiple days pass and police conduct a sequence of interviews probing potential suspects and interceptors, an ominous communication from the Laughing Man warns of another planned attack. The disembodied hacker begins to act again, pulling renewed scrutiny onto the cold case and those connected to it.
