At Queen Victoria's behest, thirteen-year-old Earl Ciel Phantomhive takes up residence at Weston College, a renowned all-boys institution famed for its traditions and rigorous studies, to investigate the disappearance of one of the monarch's relatives who has been gone for months. Using his aristocratic rank, Ciel gains rapid admission as a student, while his enigmatic, demonic butler Sebastian Michaelis accepts a teaching role within the school to support the inquiry. Ciel expects to find the missing person among the college populace, but he soon discovers he cannot directly approach the headmaster, who may hold crucial information about the case. The headmaster’s primary contacts are the four dormitory leaders collectively called the Prefect 4 (P4)—Edgar Redmond, Lawrence Bluewer, Herman Greenhill, and Gregory Violet—so Ciel must devise a strategy to earn their favor and access their networks. Beneath the college’s polished reputation and among its pupils lie concealed matters that complicate Ciel’s mission and make uncovering the truth more difficult than he anticipated.
