Synopsis

After his father dies and English attackers raze his village, Einar dreams of a quiet life tending new fields with his family. That hope is shattered when raiders strike again: Danes set fire to his land, kill his loved ones, and seize him to be taken to Denmark as a slave. Clinging to his mother’s last counsel, Einar survives a brutal change in fortune. He is bought by Ketil, a compassionate landowner who offers Einar the possibility of earning his liberty through labor. On the farm Einar is teamed with Thorfinn, a withdrawn and sorrowful fellow slave. Together they toil in the fields, each confronting past transgressions and current schemes that threaten their fragile prospects. Amid grief and hardship, they persist in pursuit of a faint prospect of peace, redemption, and freedom in an unforgiving world.
