A troubled young man, inclined to solve problems through violence, relies on his self-taught combat ability while lacking courtesy and discipline. During a fight in the Doya slums he defeats a gang despite being outnumbered, catching the eye of Danpei Tange, a former boxing coach now living as an alcoholic. Recognizing the youth’s natural ability, Danpei proposes to train him to become Japan’s top boxer. Initially dismissive of the coach as a hopeless drunk, the young man changes course after Danpei rescues him; he moves in with the coach to begin formal boxing instruction. His unruly temperament and recurring reliance on old habits complicate his progress. To endure the demands of a professional boxing path, he must learn to trust his mentor and absorb the techniques taught, while confronting the physical and emotional hardships that will test his resolve.
