Synopsis
After repelling a recent Wave of Catastrophe, Naofumi Iwatani—the Shield Hero—has no leisure. Queen Mirelia Q. Melromarc informs him that the other three Cardinal Heroes have vanished, assigning him the task of locating them. With no leads, Naofumi turns attention to an urgent social crisis: the expanding enslavement of demi-humans. Resolute to oppose this abuse, he and his allies travel to Zeltoble, a mercenary nation where trafficking demi-humans has become a profitable enterprise. To raise funds needed to buy freedom for the captives, they adopt disguises and enter illegal coliseum fights, deliberately manipulating results to accumulate a large reward. All the while, the prospect of another Wave of Catastrophe looms, forcing Naofumi to balance rescuing the missing heroes with protecting those close to him.
