Synopsis

At the start of the 21st century, supernatural abilities have been formalized into a taught technical discipline. First High School trains young magicians and ranks entrants by exam results: top scorers enter the First Course as elite students, while lower-ranked candidates enter the Second Course as reserves. The story centers on siblings Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba, both enrolled at this school. Miyuki earns a place among the ranked elite, whereas Tatsuya is assigned to the reserves despite low practical scores. Although judged deficient in conventional magic, Tatsuya demonstrates exceptional technical understanding, uncommon combat aptitude, and distinctive magical methods, marking him as an anomalous presence within the academy.
