By 2199, Earth has been reduced to irradiated wastelands after successive planet-destroying assaults by the expansionist Gamilas Empire. Humanity survives below ground in subterranean cities while the planet's surface remains uninhabitable. A distant world, Iscandar, offers a potential remedy: the Cosmo Reverse System, a technology said to reverse radiation damage and restore Earth's environment. To secure that chance at recovery, the remnants of the Earth Defense Force concentrate their assets into a single, ambitious undertaking—the starship Yamato. Powered by an ostensibly limitless Wave Motion Engine, the Yamato is outfitted to cross 168,000 light-years to Iscandar and bring the restorative system back to Earth. Its crew blends youthful figures like Tactical Officer Susumu Kodai with seasoned officers such as Captain Juuzou Okita; their backgrounds and levels of experience differ, but they are united by the urgent objective of completing the hazardous voyage and delivering the means to save humanity.
