Synopsis

Hanamichi Sakuragi, known for his fiery temper, towering stature, and striking red hair, enters Shohoku High determined to end a long streak of romantic rejections and finally win a girlfriend. His reputation causes most classmates to steer clear, leaving him convinced of two things: he despises basketball and he urgently needs a romantic relationship. When Haruko Akagi, unfamiliar with his past, casually asks whether he likes basketball, Hanamichi is instantly smitten and replies with exaggerated enthusiasm. She escorts him to the gym and challenges him about dunking; in an effort to impress her he leaps but misses dramatically, colliding with the blackboard. Haruko then points out Hanamichi’s extraordinary athletic potential to the basketball team’s captain, and gradually Hanamichi is drawn into the team’s bonds and the competitive world of the sport he had once rejected.
