Synopsis

While visiting the National Library, Miaka Yuuki and Yui Hongo discover an odd, glowing book that transports them into an unfamiliar realm. There they are attacked by slave traders and rescued by Tamahome, a young man marked by a Chinese character on his forehead. Shortly after, the red glow reappears and carries Yui away, separating the friends. Determined to find Yui, Miaka requests Tamahome's help. Their situation becomes more complex when they meet Emperor Hotohori, who interprets Miaka as the prophesied priestess of the guardian deity Suzaku. Hotohori explains that by assembling Suzaku's seven Celestial Warriors, the priestess can invoke the god and have her desires fulfilled—an outcome he believes could restore his nation and which also seems to offer Miaka a way to reunite with her friend. Convinced, Miaka accepts the priestess role and embarks on the trials required to gather the warriors. Back at the library, Yui finds herself returned alone and can only observe as Miaka faces the challenges laid out by the book and the world beyond, unable to directly intervene as her friend becomes the heroine of the story.
