Synopsis

On a ferry bound for Fuuka Academy, new arrival Mai Tokiha and her ailing younger brother Takumi encounter a drifting girl rescued aboard. Soon after, the vessel is attacked by a figure who summons a mechanized monster; the injured girl, Mikoto Minagi, responds by using a supernatural blade to repel the threat. Mai learns that Mikoto is also a student at Fuuka Academy and that certain female students possess abilities known as HiME (Highly-advanced Materializing Equipment). These HiME are entrusted with protecting the school and the surrounding city from hostile beings called Orphans. As further confrontations with these enigmatic creatures occur on campus, Mai discovers she too is a HiME and can manifest a Child, a mechanical entity with both practical functions and formidable combat capability. Confronted with this revelation and the obligations it brings, Mai becomes one of a group of thirteen HiME tasked with defending their school and their loved ones against an unclear menace while coping with the responsibilities and risks tied to their powers.
