Synopsis

On August 14, during a sweltering summer, Shintarou Kisaragi reluctantly steps out after two years indoors when a soda spill ruins his keyboard. With shops mostly closed for the Obon holiday, he and Ene, a spirited digital girl living in his computer, must go to the local department store to find a replacement. Leaving his room triggers intense anxiety, but the prospect of being cut off from his machine is worse. Their outing is abruptly derailed when they become entangled in a dangerous hostage incident. A band of adolescents known as the Mekakushi Dan, each possessing unusual ocular abilities, intervenes and helps bring the situation under control. As a consequence, Shintarou and Ene are drawn into the group. The members’ powers appear to interlock like parts of a larger pattern, and as individual histories surface, a concealed connection among them begins to emerge.
