Eight years after his father's unexplained death, Kaito Kuroba, a playful yet otherwise typical teenager, uncovers a hidden truth: the famed Phantom Thief Kaito Kid—dubbed "The Magician Under the Moonlight"—was his father. That former thief was killed by a criminal syndicate hunting the Pandora Gem, a legendary stone linked to the Valley Comet that appears once every ten thousand years and is said to weep a tear; consuming that tear is rumored to bring immortality. Driven by a promise to hold those responsible accountable, Kaito assumes his father's thief identity. Night after night he carries out daring jewel heists, not for fame or fortune, but to track down the Pandora Gem before the organization can seize its reputed power.
