When Marquis Reinhard von Lohengramm's scheme destabilizes the Free Planets Alliance, former Rear Admiral Arthur Lynch triggers a coup on Heinessen using a blueprint supplied by Reinhard. Lynch persuades longtime friend Admiral Dwight Greenhill to oversee the National Salvation Military Council's overthrow of the civilian regime. Admiral Yang Wen-li, determined to safeguard democratic institutions and the Alliance constitution, confronts his fellow countrymen—including the father of his loyal aide, Lieutenant Frederica Greenhill. With the Alliance consumed by internal crisis, the Galactic Empire moves to crush the Lippstadt League under Duke Otto von Braunschweig without facing immediate resistance. Reinhard, separated from his trusted commander High Admiral Siegfried Kircheis, increasingly relies on the calculating counsel of Vice Admiral Paul von Oberstein, whose authority within the Lohengramm command rises. As conflict brings inevitable casualties across both factions, Yang and Reinhard are forced to consider how their choices will be judged by history and whether their objectives can justify the measures they take.
