Chizuru Yukimura adopts a male disguise and departs her peaceful home for Kyoto to locate her missing father, Koudou, who works as a physician. Upon arrival she encounters the city's instability firsthand when two ronin attack her in the street. Before she can react, a pale-haired, red-eyed swordsman kills the assailants, and shortly after three members of the Shinsengumi—an organized police force loyal to the shogunate—appear and eliminate the mysterious fighter. Taken into custody by the Shinsengumi for questioning, Chizuru learns that the doctor they seek is the same man she came to find. The head of the unit permits her to remain under their supervision while they continue the search. Assigned as an assistant to Toshizou Hijikata, the group's second-in-command, Chizuru begins to uncover links between Kyoto's fraught political climate, the ominous white-haired warrior, and her own personal quest.
