Synopsis

After Hakuouki’s events, Chizuru Yukimura and the Shinsengumi evacuate Kyoto and voyage to Edo. With commander Isami Kondou absent, vice-commander Toshizou Hijikata assumes acting command, confronting the strain of leadership and an emerging, uncontrollable craving for blood that alarms those around him. The same affliction begins to afflict some members of the unit, pushing loyalties and sanity to the brink. Kondou’s eventual return brings imperial orders to hold the castle and a new designation for the force: the Kouyou Chinbutai. Amid shifting battlelines and uncertain allegiances, Chizuru accompanies the Shinsengumi into full-scale conflict, presses on with her search for her missing father, and experiences a deepening connection with Hijikata as the unit faces the costs of war.
