As environmental decline and pollution threaten the planet, the International Scientific Organization (ISO) is formed to restore ecological balance. An international criminal syndicate called Gallactor seeks to seize control of the ISO and pursue global domination, acting under the influence of an extraterrestrial figure known as Generalissimo X, who issues commands through the masked Berg Katse on Earth. To oppose Gallactor and its mechanized threats, ISO scientist Dr. Nambu recruits five young specialists into a combat unit named Gatchaman, the Science Commandos. Wearing striking bird-inspired outfits and equipped with scientifically based weaponry, the team—Ken (the Eagle), the composed leader; Joe (the Condor), impulsive yet capable; Jun (the Swan), skilled and poised; Jinpei (the Swallow), small but eager; and Ryu (the Horned Owl), physically powerful—undertakes missions against Gallactor’s assaults worldwide. Their individual devices are complemented by their principal vehicle, the Phoenix, an aircraft that can convert into a blazing arrow to confront massive adversaries. The series follows the squad’s continuous vigilance and high-stakes confrontations as they counter Gallactor’s attempts to conquer the world.
