Nobita uncovers a tiny sapling hidden beyond a hill, but his mother refuses to let him cultivate it at home. With help from one of Doraemon's futuristic devices, the plant is transformed into a sentient, mobile tree. Nobita christens the living tree Ki-bō, and the pair develop a close, brotherly relationship that sets the stage for their ensuing journeys and encounters.
