Synopsis

Set in 19th-century Qing Dynasty China amid a fictional period known as the Era of the Cooking Wars, the narrative follows a nation teetering toward disorder while culinary hierarchy governs social order. In this world, top-tier chefs hold high status: insulting them, mocking culinary practice, or impersonating a master carries severe consequences. Chefs vie for reputation and influence through public contests and skill, risking honor and livelihood. The country is divided into four principal culinary regions—Beijing, Szechuan, Shanghai, and Guangdong—and the story begins in Szechuan, the protagonist Mao’s birthplace. After his mother Pai, renowned as the 'Fairy of Cuisine,' dies, Mao resolves to become a Super Chef and inherit his mother’s role as Master Chef of her restaurant. Before assuming that position, he travels across China to expand his knowledge of diverse cooking styles, aiming to reach the level of legend his mother once held. Along the way he forges friendships and encounters determined rivals who challenge him through the art of cooking.
