Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Jirou Azuma lives a quiet life with his grandfather, utilizing his unique ability to communicate with animals for their protection and companionship. Both Jirou and his grandfather are descendants of an ancient shinobi clan, dedicated to preserving their family's martial arts through continuous training. Jirou's world is upended after he rescues a black cat, Ragou, only to discover it is a mononoke—a demonic spirit with a long history of conflict against humans. When a hostile mononoke attacks Ragou, Jirou uses his shinobi training to intervene but suffers a mortal wound. Ragou, facing the choice to absorb Jirou's fading energy to restore himself, instead opts to transfer his remaining power to Jirou. This act revives the boy and grants him significant supernatural abilities that complement his shinobi fighting style. Ryousuke Shiba, an officer from the Bureau of Espionage tasked with neutralizing aggressive mononoke, observes this event. Shiba offers Jirou and his grandfather a position in the Bureau's new squad, Black Torch, to assist in combating powerful mononoke that endanger people.
