Synopsis

Yuugi Mutou is a timid young man frequently targeted by tormentors and reliant on the support of his kind childhood friend, Anzu Mazaki; he longs for a dependable companion who truly understands him. Possessing the Millennium Puzzle—an enigmatic Egyptian relic acquired by his grandfather—Yuugi believes that finishing it will fulfill that wish. When he completes the puzzle, a distinct, authoritative persona emerges from within: Yami Yuugi, the so-called King of Games. This other self is composed, fierce, and unyielding, stepping forward whenever Yuugi faces injustice. Yami Yuugi compels adversaries into supernatural contests known as Shadow Games, where defeat results in confronting the dark impulses dwelling in one’s own heart. The series follows the tension between Yuugi’s vulnerability and the darker alter who defends him through those perilous matches.
