On Tokyo's Wangan Route, nocturnal street racers converge chasing speed above all else. A newcomer stirs the veterans when he acquires a Nissan Fairlady Z notorious among locals as The Devil Z. Despite warnings from Eriko Asakura—who lost her brother in an accident involving that same model—the new owner, who shares her brother's name, grows increasingly consumed by the car's unsettling influence even after suffering two crashes. Now a high school dropout supporting himself to cover repair costs, Akio forms ties with the route's regulars: the fabled pilot of a Porsche 911 Turbo known on the highway as Blackbird; Tatsuya Shima, a talented surgeon whose driving is as precise as his skill in the operating room; and Reina Akikawa, a daytime model who reveals exceptional ability behind the wheel of her Nissan Skyline GT-R at night. Through these contacts, Akio locates Jun Kitami, the reclusive engineer who originally designed The Devil Z's engine. After meeting Akio, Jun returns to crafting dangerously powerful engines. As Jun resumes his work and Akio pursues the car's grip, the Wangan racers become entangled in an escalating conflict with The Devil Z, a relentless contest of speed with consequences that stretch far beyond simple rivalry.
