Six months after a lethal outcome in his bout with Rikiishi, Joe attempts to move past the trauma and resumes his boxing career. He stages a notable comeback, winning several matches by body-shot knockouts, yet his reluctance to strike the head—rooted in the earlier tragedy—undermines his performance when he receives a national title opportunity. The reigning champion, Tiger Ozaki, exploits Joe’s predictable approach, forcing Joe’s corner to concede. Concerned for his recovery, Youko, Joe’s romantic partner and proprietor of the gym where Rikiishi trained, brings in Carlos Rivera, a ranked Venezuelan boxer, to challenge and guide Joe. Rivera’s presence aims to restore Joe’s confidence and propel him toward regional and global contention while Joe confronts the emotional barriers left by the fatal fight.
